About

A small nursery in Nicosia

Ammos is sand and anthos is flower, which covers the growing conditions and the payoff. We grow succulents and cacti, sell them to people on this island, and answer the phone when something goes wrong with one.

Cyprus is a good place to be a succulent and a hard place to be most other houseplants. Summer runs past forty degrees, water restrictions are periodic and real, and the plants that get through it without argument are the ones built for exactly that. Sixteen species, chosen on that basis and grown on here rather than shipped in and sold the same week.

The stock spends its last weeks outdoors in Nicosia before it goes on sale. That matters more than it sounds: a plant raised under Dutch glass and sold in June will scorch on a Cypriot balcony inside a fortnight, and the customer gets blamed for it. Ours have already had the summer.

Between the general garden centres, which stock succulents as a shelf among many, and the specialist growers an hour outside the city, there was room for a bench of properly grown plants with somebody behind it who can tell you why your living stone has split into four heads.

If something goes wrong

The plant is our problem until it settles in

Damaged on arrival: send a photo within 48 hours and we replace it or refund it. No returns form, and we do not ask you to post a cactus back to us.

Struggling later: message us a photo whenever it looks wrong, for as long as you own the plant. Most first-year losses are root rot from one watering too many, which is diagnosable from a picture and fixable next time. We would rather spend ten minutes on that than sell you a replacement.

Sourcing

Where our plants come from

Every plant we sell is nursery-grown, propagated by licensed wholesale growers in the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain. Nothing on the bench was collected from the wild.

That is worth stating because cacti and most succulents are protected species in international trade, and the rarer ones have a genuine poaching problem behind them. The plants that need documentation travel with it, and we keep it. If you collect seriously and want the paperwork for a particular plant, ask and we will send it.

Questions

Asked often enough to answer here

How much is delivery?

From €6, free over €70. A 20 cm barrel cactus costs more to box than an 8.5 cm pot, so we quote the exact figure when we confirm your list.

Can I choose the exact plant?

Yes, if you collect. Ask when you send the list and we will hold two or three of the species side by side for you to pick from.

Do you gift wrap?

Yes, at no charge. Say so in the notes, tell us what to write on the card, and we can send it straight to the recipient.

Do you sell pots?

A small range at the nursery. We also repot anything you buy into the right gritty mix before it leaves, free, which matters more than the pot does.

Will these live outdoors here?

Most of them prefer it. Sempervivum, Opuntia, Aeonium, and Aloe are outdoor plants in Nicosia year-round. Haworthia and the Christmas cactus want shade.

Do you do offices and events?

Yes. Courtyard planting, office greenery, and quantities of small pots for weddings and corporate gifts. Send the brief and we will price it.
